Executive Director

Title: Executive Director

Position Status: Independent contractor to work about 520 hours per year, on a flexible schedule, with office and equipment provided. The position is open immediately but is to be filled by September 1, 2023.

Reports to: The Board of Directors of the Foundation via the Board Chair, Lead Pastor, and Executive Committee

Position Overview: To provide the Christian-based leadership necessary to successfully implement the development strategies, objectives, policies, and programs of the St. Paul’s UMC Foundation in order to support the mission and ministries of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

 Summary of Responsibilities: 

  • Plan, design, implement and manage a comprehensive development strategy through the Foundation Board and its members to secure financial support for the ministry of the church. 
  • Obtain an understanding of the mission and ministries of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. 
  • Establish and nurture relationships with church members, staff, and the extended community through personal contact and follow-up.
  • Maintain a gift recognition program that addresses both current and future gift commitments through planned bequests, gifts, wills, insurance policies, etc.
  • Review and update donor lists and major gift prospects on a regular basis.
  • Report regularly to the Foundation Board on all development activities and opportunities.
  • Develop and facilitate educational programs and materials that encourage planned giving based in Christian principles.
  • Manage the legal and ethical issues which face the development area.
  • Coordinate the development of written policies and procedures that govern the activities of the Foundation.
  • Oversee and collaborate with the Foundation Treasurer.

Core Competencies:

  • Adhere to the basic tenets of Christianity and have an active spiritual life.
  • Have meaningful work experience in the development field or related fields.
  • Be willing to enthusiastically support the missional priorities of St. Paul’s UMC.
  • Be conversant with basic estate planning, donor gift-giving options, and IRS regulations related to charitable giving.
  • Be a relationship builder who enjoys, respects, and understands people, can motivate others, and has a good sense of humor.
  • Have strong verbal, written, and listening skills.
  • Be an organizer who keeps accurate records, makes timely calls, and does thorough follow up.
  • Be a motivated self-starter who needs minimal guidance and works with persistence, optimism, and creativity.
  • Be able to maintain good working relationships with the Foundation's volunteer Board and the Church Staff.
  • Understand the principles of fundraising and be able to adhere to high ethical standards.
  • Be comfortable asking for money.
  • Be able to use technology tools in support of the development program.
  • Be committed to continuing education and willing to ask others for guidance and ideas.
